“…muscular, savory palate with an herbal lift on the finish.”

Vineyard Notes

The Spring Mountain appellation lies above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley. The area is defined by small vineyards, often hand-tilled on terraces and sloping meadows, and wineries hidden from view among steep winding roads. Over the years, despite its limited space and remoteness, the Spring Mountain appellation has produced an abundance of wines acclaimed worldwide for an unmistakable profile. Unlike other mountain appellations, these wines have an intense flavor that leans more to dark red fruit than black, with an earthy minerality and unusually silky, balanced tannins.

Winemaking Notes

The Amici Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is always a wine of freshness driven by tannins, and the 2019 is no different. Capturing the essence of mountain-grown fruit, the wine is powerful yet graceful, with perfumed aromas of Bing Cherry, violet, plum and vanilla. The savory, dense palate features flavors of black licorice, black olive and blackberry. Strong, chalky mountain in addition to the round finish show the age-ability of this wine.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon gives up warm cassis, black cherry compote, and cedar plus sauteed herbs, tobacco, and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy, muscular, savory palate with an herbal lift on the finish.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District is one of the more accessible wines in the range. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red berry and blood orange all run through this bright, impeccably polished Cabernet. I liked the 2019 more from barrel, but then again, Spring Mountain Cabernets often shut down after bottling. It will be interesting to see where this ends up in a few years’ time.

Blackcurrants, cassis, mocha, bark, dried earth and walnuts on the nose. Chocolate and coffee too. Full-bodied with firm, broad tannins. Intense yet vibrant and cool with pretty walnuts and dried flowers on the velvety and earthy finish. Charred oak there too. Try in 2024.
